19: Retrospective review of obstetrical readmissions for the indication of postpartum infection

Objectives

We intended to characterize the cohort of women readmitted with an infection during the post-partum period with specific focus on identifying patients that may have been candidates for outpatient management.

Methods

A retrospective chart review of all obstetrical patients readmitted for infection within 30 days of their index admission during the 2012/2013 fiscal year was performed at a single tertiary care center. Data collected included demographic information, medical complications, pregnancy complications maternal risk factors, SIRS criteria on readmission, and eligibility for outpatient management. The criteria used to determine eligibility were as follows: not meeting SIRS criteria, residing within city limits, clear diagnosis, not requiring surgical intervention, and patient reliability. Patients had to meet all requirements to be considered eligible for outpatient management. Descriptive statistics using the SAS (version 9.3) program was used to analyze the data.
