18: Association between HIV, highly active anti-retroviral therapy and pre-eclampsia at the university teaching hospital, Lusaka, Zambia

Objectives

To determine if Highly Active Anti-Retroviral Therapy (HAART) use among HIV positive pregnant women is associated with an increased risk of pre-eclampsia.

Methods

We conducted a prospective cohort study comprised of 824 pregnant women with known HIV status presenting to the labor ward at the University Teaching Hospital in Lusaka, Zambia from August 2014 to December 2014. Demographic data, obstetric history, and HIV medication use was obtained through an interviewer administered questionnaire and chart review. We compared maternal and clinical characteristics of women who developed pre-eclampsia. A multiple logistic regression model was used to assess the association of HAART with pre-eclampsia.
