Relationship with the Society for Maternal Fetal Medicine

The American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology (AJOG) has a long-standing history of providing an information platform for the Society for Maternal Fetal Medicine (SMFM). This relationship dates back to 1991 when AJOG published its first supplement with the abstracts and program information for the Annual Meeting of the Society. The relationship between the Journal and the Society has continued and grown ever since. Shortly after publishing the first supplement, the Journal began dedicating special issues in which we publish many of the full manuscripts that emanated from abstracts that have been presented at the Society’s Annual Meeting. Several years ago, AJOG created a fast track for the rapid publication of a number of the most important papers that came from oral presentations at the SMFM Meeting. In addition, several SMFM “branded” articles, which are reviews of topical subjects by the most prominent experts in the field, have been published in the Journal over the last several years. The newest chapter of this relationship is launched in the current issue of the Journal with the publication of the Society’s first “SMFM Clinical Opinion.” This project has been in the works now for several years. In this issue, the SMFM Publication Committee, with the assistance of Dr Michael Belfort, presents their opinion article on placenta accreta, which is certainly a timely and important subject of major interest to maternal fetal medicine and obstetric clinicians. Much like ACOG’s Practice Bulletins, this article (and those to follow) provides the latest evidence on the subject and makes recommendations on patient evaluation and management that are based on the available evidence and are written by experts with both research and clinical expertise. The Journal looks forward to publishing several of these articles per year. The Editors and Publisher of AJOG feel this important addition to our relationship with the Society is a new step in enhancing the goal of improving patient care and outcomes by providing the most up-to-date information to our subscribers and readers. We hope you will agree, and we welcome your comments.
