Chapter 7 Hydrosalpinx

Hydrosalpinx is a fluid accumulation in the fallopian tube which has become blocked, at the fimbrial end and the isthmus. This blockage can be caused by infection, sexually transmitted disease, previous sterilisation, endometriosis or surgery.

The ultrasound appearance of the fluid within the tube, can be confused with follicles; however, careful scanning and rotating the probe will demonstrate the continuity of the fluid between one component to the next of the tortuous tube.

Corrugations in the wall of the distended tube may be seen. These corrugations are not obvious if the hydrosalpinx expansion of the tube has been longstanding.
