We thank Drs Charalampos for their thoughtful and supportive letter. We strongly agree with its content. They close with an appeal to the physician’s self-interest, which comes under the professional virtue of prudence. This virtue directs the physician to identify legitimate self-interest and protect it, so long as doing so does not impede discharging professional responsibility. We argued that it is not permissible for physicians to participate in planned home birth. Refusing to do so out of the buttressing appeal to the prudential self-interest to avoid exposure to unnecessary liability is therefore completely appropriate.
