I appreciate Drs Chaudhary’s and Bano’s interest and insights. The importance of being sensitive to our patients’ individuality, whether based on culture, unique circumstance, or psychological need, is an essential component of the physician-patient relationship. There is an old adage that where we stand depends on where we sit. The patient’s perspective is often different from our own, and we must struggle to appreciate, indeed in many circumstances to celebrate, that difference. Perhaps most critically, I applaud these authors for recognizing that interpersonal skills, 1 of the 6 competencies that the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education believes form the core of resident education, must hold rank with professionalism, knowledge, and all the other competencies that obstetrical faculty are obligated to teach.
