Fasano A, Berti I, Gerarduzzi T, et al. Arch Intern Med. 2003;163(3):286–292
Background
Though celiac disease (CD) was once thought to be a rare condition, the prevalence of the diagnosis in European populations increased markedly from 1:4,000 to 1:340 from 1970 to 1990.1,2 It is now recognized that the classic symptoms of diarrhea, abdominal pain, and weight loss do not encompass all disease presentations. This was the first large-scale study to evaluate the prevalence of CD in the US.
Objectives
To determine the prevalence of CD in at-risk and not-at-risk groups in the US.
Methods
Cross-sectional screening study in 32 US states from 1996 to 2001.
