National Resources for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender Youth, Providers, and Support Persons




In caring for LGBT youth, pediatric practitioners may find a number of community resources helpful for addressing the needs that are discussed throughout this volume. These may be found at local, state, national, and international levels. As an example and a partial resource list, below are some national/international organizations. The list is neither exhaustive nor definitive, but may be useful for practitioners to consider and use to further explore options. It includes information about these organizations’ services.


For providers


American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry ( www.aacap.org )


The American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry provides several mental health resources relevant to lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender (LGBT) youth and families, including best-practice guidelines (Practice Parameters), patient education materials (Facts for Families), and other guidelines and resources.


American Academy of Pediatrics Section on Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender Health and Wellness ( www.aap.org )


The SOLGBTHW of the American Academy of Pediatrics is a group of pediatricians and other health providers interested in LGBT health and wellness.


American Psychiatric Association ( www.psychiatry.org )


The American Psychiatric Association provides mental health resources relevant to LGBT patients, including youth and families, including practice guidelines and position papers, a best-practice highlights guideline called “Working with LGBTQ Patients,” and a Gay, Lesbian and Bisexual Caucus for practitioners.


Gay and Lesbian Medical Association ( www.glma.org )


The Gay and Lesbian Medical Association (GLMA) is an international organization of LGBT health care professionals and their supporters that focuses on ensuring health care equality for LGBT individuals. Members of GLMA use their individual expertise to address the health and well-being of LGBT people, specifically through health care reform, continuing education of health care professionals, and hospital discrimination. The Web site provides a directory of providers with competence in LGBT health care.


National Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender Health Education Center ( www.lgbthealtheducation.org )


The National LGBT Health Education Center focuses on providing resources and educational programs to health care organizations and providers to optimize care for LGBT people.


World Professional Association for Transgender Health ( www.wpath.org )


The World Professional Association for Transgender Health (WPATH) is a professional organization dedicated to providing high-quality health care for transgender, transsexual, and gender-nonconforming individuals. The organization connects professionals across a variety of fields to further the understanding and treatment of gender identity disorder. The Web site provides a directory of providers with competence in transgender health care.




For youth and families


Advocates for Youth ( www.advocatesforyouth.org )


Advocates for Youth partners with youth leaders, adult allies, and youth-serving organizations to advocate for policies and champion programs that recognize young people’s rights to honest sexual health information; accessible, confidential, and affordable sexual health services; and the resources and opportunities necessary to create sexual health equity for all youth.


Crisis Text Line ( www.crisistextline.org/textline/ )


Crisis Text Line is a free, national, 24-hour text line that provides counseling for people in any type of crisis.


Family Acceptance Project ( http://familyproject.sfsu.edu )


The Family Acceptance Project (FAP) is a research, intervention, education, and policy initiative designed to decrease the risks faced by LGBT youth (homelessness, human immunodeficiency virus, suicide) by promoting family support and well-being. The initiative focuses on the impact families can have on the risk and well-being of their LGBT children, and provides training on their family interventional approach to providers, families, and religious leaders worldwide.


Gay Lesbian & Straight Education Network ( www.glsen.org )


The Gay Lesbian & Straight Education Network (GLSEN) is an organization that seeks to end discrimination, harassment, and bullying caused by sexual identity, gender identity, and gender expression in K-12 schools. GLSEN provides educational resources for educators, advocates for inclusive safe school policies, and conducts research to inform legislators of the issues LGBT youth face, as well as developing best practices and resources to create a safe school environment.


Parents, Families, Friends, and Allies United with Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender People ( www.pflag.org )


Parents, Families, Friends, and Allies United with LGBT People (PFLAG) is the nation’s largest nonprofit organization for LGBT allies and family, with more than 500 chapters across the country. PFLAG focuses on providing support for LGBT families, educating the broader public on issues faced by members of the LGBT community, and advocating for policies and laws that promote LGBT equality.


stopbullying.gov ( www.stopbullying.gov )


This is a Web site run by the US Department of Health and Human Services that provides information on bullying, cyberbullying, people at risk, and how to prevent and respond to bullying.


Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration National Suicide Resources ( www.suicidepreventionlifeline.org )


The National Suicide Prevention Lifeline is a toll-free, confidential suicide prevention hotline available 24-hours a day. Crisis counseling and mental health referrals are regularly provided: 1-800-273-TALK.


The Trevor Project ( www.thetrevorproject.org/pages/get-help-now#tc )


The Trevor Project is a nonprofit organization that focuses on crisis intervention and suicide prevention for LGBT youth. It provides free and confidential phone, instant message, and text messaging crisis intervention services through the Trevor Lifeline (866-488-7386), TrevorChat, and TrevorText. TrevorSpace also provides a safe and secure social networking site that connects LGBT youth around the world.


True Colors Fund ( www.truecolorsfund.org )


The True Colors Fund is a philanthropic organization that aims to end homelessness among LGBT youth by educating the public and advocating within government agencies.
