Almost 10 years ago, the American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology (AJOG) changed its format. The official version of the Journal became the electronic version and appeared online at ajog.org . The print version included reviews and clinical opinions that were printed in full and summaries of the articles, including an abstract and a figure or table.
We implemented this change, aware that “the compression of time in modern life had forced us to master the art of ‘glancing’” and that reading habits have changed. From our readers’ point of view, the transition has been highly successful, because the summaries provided an easy way to see the key points, including clinical implications. We are now ready to take the next step to help our authors by removing the need to prepare an additional short version of the article.
Extended abstract: 500 words
Beginning with this January issue, the AJOG print format will now present extended abstracts, along with 1 representative figure or table, for all original research articles. We have increased the abstract length to 500 words and have added a “background” section so that our authors and readers can place the work in context. Such extended-length abstracts will be available on Medline and other search engines.
The full manuscript, published at AJOG.org , is the official manuscript of record. Because the full version is published electronically, AJOG does not restrict the number of figures, tables, or references; this allows authors to present their work as completely as necessary, including a full description of methods to favor replication. All other article types, which include Editorials, Clinical Opinions, Reviews, Viewpoints, Call to Action, Sketches, Research Letters, Letters to the Editor, and Special Reports, will be published in full in both the print and online versions of the Journal.
AJOG online
We remain committed to disseminating important information contained in the Journal to our readership in a wide variety of platforms. Readers cannot only read the print, online, and mobile device versions of the Journal but can listen to summaries of key articles in the monthly AJOG Roundup podcast, watch videos accompanying some manuscripts, and follow conversations about articles on Facebook and Twitter. We recently launched a new video feature, In the Spotlight, in which our Editors interview AJOG authors about their work.
