Definition
Sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) is the sudden and unexpected death of an infant younger than 1 year of age, which remains unexplained after a thorough case investigation, including performance of a complete autopsy, examination of the death scene, and review of the clinical history.
Epidemiology & Demographics
• In 2002, a total of 2295 SIDS deaths were recorded in the United States, corresponding to an incidence of 0.57 deaths per 1000 live births (National Center for Health Statistics).
• A higher incidence is seen among African American and Native American infants; a lower incidence is seen among Hispanic and Asian infants.
