Definition
Infant mastitis or breast abscess is breast inflammation, often occurring with abscess formation in the first 2 months of life.
Epidemiology & Demographics
• The overall incidence is low. The highest incidence was seen in the 1940s and 1950s, during the staphylococcal epidemics in hospital nurseries.
• This condition occurs only in term infants because premature infants lack full mammary development.
