Fibroadenoma
Basic Information
Definition
Fibroadenoma is a benign neoplasm of the breast that is characterized by localized proliferation of breast ducts and stroma.
Clinical Presentation
• Usually, the fibroadenoma is identified as an asymptomatic, incidental breast mass on examination by the patient or examiner. It is a nontender, rubbery mass, and it enlarges over several weeks or months.
• The mass does not vary significantly in size during menstrual cycles, but it can grow significantly with large fluctuations in estrogen, especially during pregnancy.
• Large lesions can produce symptoms that are associated with malignancy, including peau d’orange and enlarged superficial veins.
• Can be 3 to 4 cm at the time of discovery, and if not removed, it can grow up to 15 cm in diameter.
